About Us

Mother & child shoppingNisa is a unique member owned organisation, helping independent retailers remain competitive in the food and drink markets. Despite a recent tough economic climate, Nisa has flourished achieving a £1.5billion+ turnover in recent years.

With the retail sector being largely dominated by the multiples, Nisa’s objective is to create benefit, including negotiating the best deals on products, to allow its members to compete effectively. This is possible due to the sheer power behind the group, combining the members’ accumulated turnover with the efficiency of the supply chain.

Nisa is unique in that it is owned by its members – independent retailers located throughout the UK. To ensure each member, no matter how small, has equal voting rights and therefore an equal say in the company and how it is run, each member holds up to 250 shares in the company.

Nisa represents over 1134 registered shareholders providing an extremely flexible service enabling retailers to trade under their own fascia, to uphold the history connected with their store, or to take advantage of the fantastic package available under either the Nisa or Loco fascias. Nisa has undergone a heavy brand development in recent years, highlighted with the expansion into TV advertising.

The support available to Nisa members is second to none with around 280 staff at its Member Support Centre, who work in all aspects of the business to ensure the best products and support are always provided. The supply chain is also a large asset to Nisa members with warehouses located in Harlow, Scunthorpe, Stoke, and a recent addition in Livingston. Nisa operates almost a million square feet of warehousing moving 108 million cases per annum.

DHL is Nisa’s distribution partner and is committed to providing the best possible service to Nisa members as well as limiting its impact on the environment. Working under Nisa’s management, DHL manages the ambient, frozen and chilled products through all four warehouses, optimising the flow of product across the supply chain network. DHL is the global market leader in the logistics industry and offers superior service quality and local knowledge.

Nisa gives retailers the most competitive and wide ranging own label portfolio under the Heritage name, offering customers a great selection of high quality products at great prices competing with the multiples’ offering. This includes Heritage Select and Heritage Value.

Members of the group can also take advantage of the comprehensive marketing and public relations support at the Member Support Centre, including five million personalised consumer leaflets which are distributed door-to-door every three weeks as well as national media campaigns in newspapers such as The Sun increasing brand awareness and driving footfall into Nisa stores. The PR department is also on hand to provide support with local charity donations, store openings, and general media relations.

At the end of 2010 Nisa launched its first ever television advert which was extremely well received with 39.5 million people seeing it at least once whilst 25.5 million people saw the advert at least four times. This developed further in 2011 with a brand new television advert airing at the end of 2011 and into 2012.
