Nigel Gray, Business Unit Director - Symbol

Nigel Gray, Business Unit Director - Symbol

Nigel recently joined Nisa under the new position of business unit director for symbol in April 2014 and he will use his expertise to lead the symbol group business unit in a more retail and consumer focussed direction. Nigel works in partnership with Steve Leach, who has also recently joined as business unit director for independent & specialists, and these appointments together with a significant strengthening of the marketing function, positions Nisa very strongly in the symbol sector.

Nigel has most recently held the position of retail and operations director at Spar Henderson Group, where he was accountable for the commercial and operational performance of the 80 company owned sites across Northern Ireland and a team of 1,700 people. He has an extensive experience within the retail sector and a proven track record of delivering outstanding results in both single and multi-site roles within blue chip and privately owned organisations. Nigel also previously held senior roles at Marks and Spencer where he progressed his retail career from graduate trainee through to regional manager for Northern Ireland and Isle of Man.

Steve Leach, Business Unit Director - Independent & Specialists

Steve Leach, Business Unit Director - Independent & Specialists

Steve joined Nisa as business unit director in January 2014 to set up and lead the new Independent and Specialist business unit. Steve is developing the business to further meet the differing needs of these members and to enable Nisa to be a ‘champion of independent and specialists’ in the retail sector.

Steve has a wealth of experience in retail, most recently holding the position of head of retail at Vodafone. Steve led the retail leadership team and initiated a transformation programme to drive operational excellence and an award winning customer focus, within 360 stores and a team of 3,000 people.

Steve is passionate about delivering market leading customer care, leading high performing teams and delivering results at pace. Specialising in change management and retail operations Steve has developed his career with successive appointments with Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury’s, and Alliance Boots where he was accountable for retail operations for 2,600 stores before joining Vodafone.

Jonathan Stowe, Distribution Director

Jonathan Stowe, Distribution Director

Jonathan Stowe joined Nisa Retail Limited in January 2010 to the newly created position of distribution director. Jonathan’s principal role is to ensure the smooth transition of the group’s distribution contract with DHL, which commenced in April 2011, along with the day-to-day activities of the distribution and warehousing function.

Jonathan has over 20 years experience in supply chain management having previously held posts with third party logistics providers, suppliers and independent wholesalers. He is experienced in managing all aspects of the supply chain, including supply and demand planning, warehousing, product re-packing and distribution, customer service and quality support.

Jonathan’s responsibilities at Nisa Retail Limited include managing all aspects of the contract between Nisa Retail Limited and its third party logistics suppliers, recommending and enhancing strategies and ensuring the best service is provided for Nisa members.

Ian Bishop, Marketing Director

Ian Bishop, Marketing Director

Ian joined Nisa as marketing director in September 2013 and has been influential in the development of the company’s marketing strategy, aiding Nisa in its quest to become a more consumer facing organisation.

Ian is a commercially astute marketing professional who has extensive experience within the sector, most recently as marketing director of Costcutter Supermarkets Group Limited where he led the development of the own label range as well as researching and driving the strategy for a “good, better, best” fascia solution.

Ben Scott, Company Secretary

Ben Scott

Ben joined Nisa in 2013 as head of legal later taking on the role as company secretary in December 2013.

He joined with over 20 years’ experience in the legal sector holding various senior roles including group legal director at HomeServe and head of commercial contracts, legal at Marks & Spencer.

In his role at Nisa, Ben acts as the company secretary to the board of Nisa and solicitor and counsel to the company, providing advice to the board and executives.

Deborah Broddle, Human Resources Manager

Deborah Broddle, Human Resources Manager

Deborah joined Nisa Retail as Human Resources manager in March 2008. She has a BA (Hons) degree in Languages For Business and is Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) qualified.

With over 17 years experience in generalist human resources management, Deborah previously held multi-site positions, predominantly within the manufacturing sector, across a range of leading brands including Betafence Ltd, MFI and MY Cartons.

Deborah is responsible for implementing the group’s human resources strategy and delivering a series of wide-ranging initiatives to meet the needs of the company and its employees. She works closely with directors and senior managers to embed a culture of human resource excellence within the company.

Alex Rimmer, Head of PR & Communications

Alex Rimmer, Head of PR & Communications

Alex joined Nisa in 2007 as PR & Communications Manager to support the development and execution of heavier weight PR activity. Alex stepped into the lead role within the communications department in 2009 before securing the role of head of PR & communications following a restructure of the Nisa business in 2013. Since then Alex has overseen a strategic shift in PR activity across the business, while also acting as editor of the company’s ‘Consortium’ magazine and the lead on public affairs for the company.

Having led the communications team through massive corporate change, attention turned to forming a communications strategy which would position Nisa as the industry leader and the only logical choice for independent retailers, building the company profile and creating a vision of success and security. Since the strategy was implemented Nisa has consistently tracked above its competitors in both trade and national media, with a significant increase in coverage across titles including The Grocer, Times & Sunday Times, FT and BBC and an up swell of retailers looking to switch allegiance to Nisa.

Previously, Alex has worked in industries ranging from agriculture and aquaculture, to retail and wholesale, both nationally and internationally, while also gaining significant government experience through relationships with DEFRA, BIS, UNIDO, Bord Bia, Food Standards Agency and the Departments of Health and Transport. Since joining Nisa Alex has also worked closely with industry trade bodies such as ACS, NIIRTA, SGF and WSTA.

David Morris, Head of IT

David Morris, Head of IT

David graduated from Hull University in 1991 with a BA (Hons) degree in Software Engineering & Industrial Data Processing. He joined a major UK and international wholesaler in 1991 delivering IT consultancy. In 1992 David joined Nisa Retail Limited as IT Operations Manager and has progressed to his present position of head of IT, having been previously responsible for e-commerce and all technical infrastructure.

James Roberts, Head of Independent & Specialists

James Roberts, Head of Independent & Specialists

James Roberts has extensive knowledge of the retail sector, which spans over 20 years, since he started running the family business Mike Roberts Foodstores, a member of Nisa for 31 years.

James served on Nisa Retail Holdings Board and Central Distribution Services Board - later named the Nisa Retail Services Board - for six years and on the IT committee, Symbol Group committee and Supermarket Store Group.

In January 2007 he joined Nisa Retail Limited as head of Commercial Operations & Member Service and most recently Head of Independent & Specialists. He has operational responsibility for key independent accounts within the group, including McColl’s, and has strategic involvement in many areas of the business, using his retail experience to ensure operations remain close to sharp-end member requirements.

Etienne Botha, Head of Digital

Etienne Botha, Head of Digital

Etienne leads the Nisa digital team who are responsible for developing and delivering multi-channel digital campaigns, as well as a full digital marketing mix, online customer acquisition, retention and loyalty programs.

Etienne has lead the transformation of several Nisa websites, improving usability, design, content and conversions. He also leads the Heritage own label digital strategy and is responsible for creating a Heritage brand presence online.

Etienne has vast digital experience both globally and locally, leading both regional and global online teams across Europe and Africa. He has previously worked for the likes of Premier Farnell, Hewlett Packard and software giant SAP.

Mike Gisby, Head of Finance

Mike Gisby, Head of Finance

Mike joined Nisa in February 2012 from the Icelandic Group UK Ltd where he held the position of finance controller at both group and divisional level. In May 2013, Mike was promoted to head of finance and is directly responsible for the finance, credit control and admin teams. Mike has more than 28 years’ experience in various financial and accounting roles in many industry sectors including manufacturing, engineering, food and distribution.

Since joining the company, Mike has been influential in many developments within Nisa, working to overhaul the company’s financial reporting and agree a new refinancing deal with Barclays.

Mike’s role includes management of Nisa’s financial accounts and cash flow forecasting as well as planning and management of the finance department, reporting directly to the finance director.

Pat Leneghan, Head Of Retail – Ireland

Pat Leneghan, Head Of Retail – Ireland.

Pat joined Nisa in 2010 initially as Northern Ireland Retail Development Manager, progressed to NI Regional Manager and was promoted in 2014 to Head Of Retail for Nisa’s business on the island of Ireland.

He worked with the Nisa board in developing and implementing Nisa’s business strategy for Ireland

He has over 30 year’s experience in business development from running his own businesses to senior management roles in the wholesale licensed and grocery sectors with companies such as Guinness (Diageo), Irish Distillers & Mace.

Lisa Williams, Head of Marketing Services

Lisa Williams, Head of Marketing Services

Lisa joined Nisa in August 2014 and is responsible for activating the marketing strategy with members, and consumers, across a range of marketing tools from TV and in store radio, through to in store PoS, seasonal and promotional event, leaflets and brochures.

With a solid commercial and creative background, Lisa works closely with teams across the business to deliver an integrated marketing plan that promotes new ideas and innovations in store.
