Chilled champion in Cardiff

A Cardiff retailer is enjoying a huge lift in chilled sales following an investment in his store to meet the growing demand from shoppers.

Anjum Khan, a Nisa partner for 22 years, increased his chiller space from nine metres to 15 in order to be able to increase the range offered in his Wilson Road store.

Sales have soared by an impressive 25 per cent with fresh meat, fruit and vegetables and ready meals all becoming more popular with customers.

And the very latest low energy consumption refrigeration from Arneg Aire has been installed in the store leading to savings of some 35 per cent on running costs – compared to the previous doored chillers.

Anjum also runs a second Nisa store in Cardiff which has recently been re-developed and is enjoying similar success in chilled categories.

He said: “I took advice from our store development manager and upped our chiller space by six metres so that I could increase the range offered and add in more of the new Co-op own label products now available to Nisa partners.

“The whole range is now much better and looks great. I believe the better the display, the more trust there is in the range and therefore the greater the sales.”

And the experienced retailer, whose stores are both based on predominantly low-income council estates, believes the future of convenience retailing lies in chilled, fresh food.

“If you are going to run a convenience store now, whatever the area in which you are situated, you need to invest in chilled food. Even in the lower demographic locations the tinned products are going down in sales and the fresh is going up,” said Anjum.
