Nisa colleagues help to transform unused field for autism support group

A number of Nisa colleagues spent the day volunteering at a local support group for adults with autism last Thursday to help regenerate a largely unused field for its residents and service users.

The volunteering session was the second as part of Nisa’s new ‘A Day to Make a Difference’ initiative, and saw 11 colleagues from Nisa’s Partner Support Centre tending to the field behind Options Roxby to begin work on a new sensory activity area, which will ultimately create a safe space to promote health and wellbeing.

Volunteers planted fruit trees, weeded, jet washed storage containers, painted and cleared sheds, decorated and filled tyres to create new planters, repaired a shed roof and secured light reflecting sensory panels into the ground; all to begin to create a tidy, peaceful outdoor space for service users at Inclusive@AALPS.

A Day to Make a Difference offers Nisa employees the opportunity to spend either a full or half day volunteering with a local good cause, allowing them to develop new skills and gain volunteering experience, whilst helping charities and other good causes in the area.

The first volunteering session took place last month at Scunthorpe General Hospital and received hugely positive feedback from colleagues at the hospital, as well as from those taking part on the day.

Anita Keech, Inclusive Coordinator and House Manager at Options Roxby House, said: “We cannot thank the team from Nisa enough for all their hard work and dedication helping us to get our back field/sensory project well on its way.

“We are very grateful for the support and kind words. This will be of great benefit to the service users, giving them space in a safe and calm environment to play and relax. You really have made a difference!

“We look forward to welcoming Nisa back for a Day to Make a Difference in spring.”

One Nisa colleague that volunteered on the day, added: “It was an excellent day, with a real sense of having achieved something to help this fantastic facility to do more with the space they have. Everyone was cheerful and in high spirits which made the day go really quickly and efficiently, with a real sense of making a difference at the end of the day.”
