Nisa member North East Convenience Stores scooped a major industry award on the 15th March 2012. The chain won Best Multiple Convenience Store for its Nisa Local in Whickham at the national Convenience Retail Awards which took place in London beating difficult competition from other major national retailers.
The Nisa Local in Whickham was opened for the local community in 2008, but underwent a full refurbishment in 2011 to establish itself as a quality convenience store providing value for money and a comfortable place to shop in the heart of the community. The store’s excellent range, layout and marketing were all key factors in helping the judges at the prestigious event to award the store with the Best Multiple Convenience Store accolade.
North East Convenience Stores is an independent retail group which is owned by Naveen and Sanjeev Vadhera. Set up in 2002 with just one store, the company now owns 18 Nisa stores based from Northumberland to Billingham and employs over 220 people making the company one of the biggest independent retail businesses within Nisa.
Sanjeev Vadhera, business development director of North East Convenience Stores commented: “We have worked exceptionally hard over the course of the past year to develop the Whickham store for our customers. The store was previously a former KwikSave site which has developed into a community store with a particular focus on fresh produce, locally sourced products and grocery as well as introducing a Post Office for the community. We are thrilled to have been awarded such a huge accolade within the independent retail sector and we will continue to develop our stores and are committed to delivering great quality, convenience and excellent value".
